Characteristic         

Saanens got their name as they are originated from the Saanen Valley of Switzerland. Saanens are the largest of the goat dairy breeds, and one of the largest milk producers.  Saanens are white or light cream in color, with white preferred.  Spots on the skin are not discriminated against but coloured spots in the hair are not desirable. The hair should be short and fine, although a fringe over the spine and thighs is often present.  Ears should be erect and alertly carried, preferably pointing forward. The face should be straight or dished. A tendency toward a roman nose is discriminated against.   A mature doe can attain 65 kg and height of a breeder is above 80 cm with a weight of over 100 kg.

Saanen does are heavy milk producers and usually yield 3.5 % milk fat. Average daily milk production is 3 kg or above, but can reach 6 kg. Lactation period is usually 8 – 9 months. Twinning rate is 1.8 heads.  The gestation period is about 5 months.  High reproduction and resistance to heat and coarse feed
